BI Nexus: drag-and-drop analytics on an OLAP cube and DWH without writing MDX

Project highlights

Analysts and business users needed a tool to build reports on the NextGen OLAP cube and warehouse data without writing MDX or SQL by hand. The old static UI lacked flexibility: complex slices, hierarchical filters, and pivot tables required developers. WEB24 delivered BI Nexus — a unified analytics platform with a drag-and-drop builder where users drop measures and dimensions, configure filters and sorts, and the backend automatically builds and runs a safe MDX or SQL query. Results appear immediately in tables, charts, and summary cards.

Challenge

Enterprise analytics often stalls at the gap between OLAP cube power and end-user usability. Teams faced familiar problems: So BI Nexus needed to:

• Provide a visual query builder instead of hand-written MDX
• Support the NextGen OLAP cube via linked server and read-only DWH access
• Offer hierarchical filters with a value tree (Year → Month → Day)
• Combine pivot tables, charts, and column totals in one UI
• Ship a safe read-only API with limits on volume and query length
• Enable a fast start via ready-made reports and saved user configurations

We designed the platform as one product: React frontend, FastAPI backend, and server-side query generation. The team delivered:

BI Nexus became a single access point for enterprise analytics: from launching a ready report quickly to ad-hoc cube slices in minutes, without developers. Key platform capabilities:

• Two data modes in one UI: NextGen OLAP cube and PostgreSQL/SQL Server DWH.
• Visual query assembly with server-side MDX auto-generation.
• Hierarchical filters with values loaded before the report runs.
• Tables with pagination, search, column totals, and summary cards.
• Charts, saved configurations, and a Quick Start section with ready reports.
• Docker build: the frontend compiles into the image and is served by FastAPI at /cube-builder.

The platform shortened the path from question to data: analysts build reports with the mouse instead of writing MDX by hand.

What we learned

BI tools win when OLAP complexity is hidden behind a clear interface — not removed from the product. Trust in data comes from read-only access, field validation against metadata, and predictable filter behavior. By combining enterprise cube power with a modern React builder, we showed that enterprise analytics can be both flexible and accessible to business users.
